Global Trade Up Despite Uncertainty

Despite a year marked by tariff shifts and route disruption, global trade volumes have kept climbing. UNCTAD figures released across July and August 2026 put world goods trade at roughly $13.7 trillion for the first half of the year โ€” a 12.5% increase year-on-year.

East Asia led the growth, continuing to anchor a significant share of global goods flow even as individual trade corridors have had to adapt around new tariff regimes and shifting compliance requirements. The headline number is a reminder that uncertainty and growth aren’t mutually exclusive โ€” businesses have, on the whole, kept moving goods and adjusting their operations to do it, rather than pulling back.

That adjustment has largely taken the form of two things: re-routing around disrupted or newly costly corridors, and revisiting Incoterms to make sure cost and risk allocation still make sense under current tariff conditions. Neither is a one-time fix โ€” both are proving to be ongoing, ordinary parts of doing international trade in 2026 rather than exceptional responses to a single event.

For companies trading internationally, the broader picture is reassuring: global demand for cross-border goods movement remains strong. The work now is less about whether to keep trading and more about doing it on routes and terms built for the conditions actually in front of you.
